12/13/2002 Rex Carr, the man who developed competitive retriever training as we know it today, passed away in California. He was 89 years old. A memorial at either the Bird Dog Hall of Fame or Retriever Hall of Fame is being planned. We are all indebted to him for his understanding of canine behavior and leading us into innovative training methods.

New AKC alert - New FAA rules could stop shipping animals by plane
Please help to spread the word, this could be BAD for all of us!
The FAA is proposing new rules that could have the effect of forcing airlines
to end the shipping of animals on their planes.
The AKC is requesting that all fanciers write or E-mail the FAA requesting
that the proposed regulations be changed to remove the provisions that are of
great concern in the currently proposed regulations. These proposed
regulations include: a requirement that all airlines report cause of death,
loss or injury to all warm and cold-blooded animals - including every
tropical fish that died en route to a pet store, labels us as "guardians" of
the animals we ship, rather than owners or consignors/consignees, and
requires the names and addresses of all owners of animals involved in an
"incident" to be made public, raising serious privacy concerns.
These regulations are animal-activist driven. The responses must be received
by the FAA by December 27.
The following is a link to the AKC website that provides more information,
including a sample letter that can be e-mailed or mailed without change, or
can be modified by you so that your letter is more personal.
Please take the few minutes to respond. It is a safe bet that animal
activists are inundating the FAA with letters on support of these rules,
whose effect, if not intent, is to cause air carriers to stop shipping live
animals.

The American Dog Owner's Association has been working since 1970 to promote responsible dog ownership and to protect the rights of dog owners and dog clubs. This is another organization that, as dog owners and trainers, we should work hard to support as they are working to protect our rights.
