Flyball: Four dogs from two teams race against each other over parallel lines of jumps. The jump height is based on the smallest dog on each team. Run as relay races, each dog in turn jumps over four hurdles, runs to the flyball box, steps on a lever on the box to release a tennis ball, and brings it back to its handler. As the first dog crosses the finish line, the next one goes. It is a timed event and the team with the fastest time wins.
AKC recognizes North American Flyball Assn. (NAFA) titles. Other organizations sponsoring flyball tournaments include the North American Flyball Organization (NAFO) and U-FLI (United Flyball League, International).
Scent Hurdles: Scent hurdle racing is another team relay-race, from which Flyball developed. Rather than retrieving a ball, the dogs retrieve their handler’s scented dumbbell from three others placed on a platform. Each dog must select the correct dumbbell and clear all the jumps down and back. It is a timed race between two teams. While there are no penalties for dropping the dumbbell or a poor carry, these will increase the time for the run. As in Flyball, the smallest dog on a team determines the jump height, but all dogs must pick up the same size dumbbell, sized to medium dogs.
The Canadian Kennel Club and the Canadian Scent Hurdle Association offer titles.
Flyball and Scent Hurdles are one of the several areas from which points can be accumulated to achieve the VIP Versatility Certificate or Versatility Certificate Excellent or Versatility Certificate Master award.
