There are four title levels of tests in the AKC Trick Dog program that must be earned in succession. The dog performs a set number of tricks from a larger list in the presence of an approved AKC CGC evaluator. The titling program was developed by the AKC in response to requests for additional fun things for people to do with their dogs. Many training classes teach some tricks already as it is a non-stressful way for a handler to learn to work with the dog while developing a training relationship.
Tricks are behaviors such as offering a high-five to physical activities such as spins or agility weave poles to fetching or barking on cue. Dogs with a CGC or obedience title already have many of the skills needed to meet the requirements for the trick titles. Luring and/or food as reinforcers are allowed when performing some of the different tricks.
Titles must be earned sequentially, however there is no limit to the number of levels which can be completed in a day.

Trick Dog is one of the several areas from which points can be accumulated to achieve the VIP Versatility Certificate or Versatility Certificate Excellent or Versatility Certificate Master award.
